Sharing Lists

There are several ways to share data with Carnet. All these ways can be mixed and used together.

File Sharing

Direct sharing of lists on the network must take into account a serious drawback: Only one user can open a list with read and write capabilities, and may save changes to the list. Other users will access the list in read-only mode.

The access privileges management is entirely left to the network administrator, through the usual system's or AppleShare's Users and Groups settings. See the appropriate manual for more information.

You can install a copy of Carnet as a 'server' on the network, and set users preferences to only access the lists in read-only mode.

Opening Lists in Read-Only Mode

A check box in the Preferences dialog can set the read-only mode as default. This mode is useful for shared lists on the network. You can create aliases to the lists and drop them in the Startup Items folder, and they will open in read-only mode.

Thus, these shared lists can be opened through the network by any number of users. They are still available in read and write to the administrator, who can update and save the lists normally.

When a read-only list is opened in read and write and updated from a remote computer, the Carnet 'server' will detect the change as soon as the list is saved and closed by the administrator. Carnet reloads the list, thus publishing the changes on the network to all users of the list. This reload is entirely automatic and is performed a few seconds after the list is closed on the remote administrator's Macintosh.

Restricted Access

It is possible to restrict certain users' access by only allowing them the Program Linking on the Carnet 'server' computer. Thus, they won't be able to open the lists, but they will still be able to perform a network search and retrieve data from the lists that are open on the server.

The administrator may elect to open the lists in read and write on the server. They will be available only in read-only from a remote computer, whatever access privileges the remote user has.

Most of these strategies for sharing data can be combined according to the needs and the number of users. See also the Network Search chapter.

The Program Linking access privileges are used both for remote searching and remote dialing.
