(Frequently Asked) Questions & Answers

My modem hangs up too fast. I don't even have time to pick-up the phone.

The dialing port open delay is too short. To make it longer, choose Edit Current Setup... in the Dial menu, then enter a longer value in the field labeled Keep the dialing port open.

If the problem continues, try checking the Power-up delay option.

When I call someone with Carnet, I can hear him/her, but he/she can't hear me, or the line seems weak and noisy.

You modem is probably still online. You must hang up the modem to give the line back to the telephone.
Hang up by clicking the Hang Up button, or by hitting <esc> or <delete>.
You can also enable the automatic hang up: Carnet will hang up the modem after a delay. See
Dialing Setup.

I'm trying to dial through the Macintosh's loudspeaker, but it doesn't work, or the number is wrong.

Try with a higher sound volume (use the Sound control panel to set it). Try also to uncheck the Use fast audio dialing box in the Preferences.

The telephone's mouthpiece should be placed as close as possible to the Macintosh's loudspeaker. Note that on some Macintosh models, the loudspeaker is placed on the side or the bottom of the computer case, which renders the audio dialing nearly unusable as there is no way to bring the telephone close enough. In such a case, use a modem to dial.

When I dial, the modem takes the line (I can hear the dial tone), but then nothing happens.

You may be connected to an old telephone circuitry that do not support dial tones and needs pulse dialing. In the dialing setup dialog, replace ATDT with ATDP to force the modem to dial with pulses.

After dialing with Carnet, my fax-modem can't receive faxes until I restart the Macintosh.

Check the Fax option in the dialing setup dialog.

My current address book is in HyperCard, FileMaker, etc. I don't want to type all over again. How to move it to Carnet?

The solution is to export it as tab-delimited text from the program you use. All the programs of that kind know how to do that and can export a text file. See the program's user manual. Then, see the Importing chapter to import the text file in Carnet.

My current address book is in my Palm Pilot, Psion, Newton, Sharp, etc. How to move it to Carnet?

The Palm Pilot is fully supported through Carnet To Go, a conduit that links your main Carnet file to the Palm address book.
The other devices are not yet directly supported. However, they all come with utilities that can convert their data to a text file on the Macintosh. Refer to the utility's manual to transfer the data and create a tab-delimited text file, then import it in Carnet.

I want to upload my Carnet list to my Palm Pilot, Psion, Newton, Sharp, etc. How can I do that?

The Palm Pilot is fully supported through Carnet To Go, a conduit that links your main Carnet file to the Palm address book.
The other devices are not yet directly supported. However, you can export your list as tab-delimited text with Carnet, then upload the text with the utility that came with your device.

Most of these devices use closed lists for the number's labels (home, office, fax...) where Carnet offers a complete freedom. Carnet To Go saves the Carnet labels in the Palm Pilot after the number, and won't lose any data. But with the other devices, you may lose some data while transfering because of that limitation.

Many of my parties have more than three phone numbers, e-mail addresses, etc. What can I do?

We are aware of that limitation and it will be lifted in a future release of Carnet. In the mean time, you can:

  • Create a second record for the same person. As the two records share the same name, they will always remain together in the list. Or, make them slightly different, such as "John Martin, Home" and "John Martin, Office".

  • Place the less-often used numbers in the Notes field. To dial a number from the Notes field, select it with the mouse, then choose Dial... from the Dial menu (or hit D).
Internet-related data such as web URLs and e-mail addresses can be activated from the Notes field with a command-click.

I would like to sort the list differently (by name, by company, by city). How can I do that?

Carnet has no sort features. This unusual design is the key to its speed. The records are always sorted alphabetically. You decide, for each record, if it should be placed (and found) by the company or by the name.

If, while typing the first characters of the name, you don't find immediatly the record you are looking for, because you placed it by the company, type the first characters of the company to find it immediatly (or vice versa). If you repeat the error on that same record, you should consider changing its placement instead of going against your intuition.

I would like to see the first names before the last names in the list. The last name-first name order looks a bit too formal to me.

This is unfortunately not possible. However, notice that the first name appears on the left of the last name in the record itself. Also, you can print these items in any order you like (see Address Book Options).

My associate and I want to share the same list through the network. But as soon as one of us opens the list, the other can't reach it anymore.

Only one user can open a list in read and write mode. If you wish to access the list simultaneously, you must open it in read-only mode. See Sharing Lists.

I have created a Carnet list that includes fax numbers. Now I want to use them for a fax mailing. How can I do that?

The solution is to export as text the names and the fax numbers (see Exporting) and reimport the text in your fax software's directory. This operation is fairly simple and will take only a few minutes.

Carnet has created the "Carnet Templates" folder in the System Folder. Why there, instead of the Preferences folder or the Carnet Folder itself?

You can actually move the Carnet Templates folder in the Preferences folder if you prefer. You can even move it anywhere you want, as long as you put an alias of it in the System (or Preferences) Folder. The alias should also be named "Carnet Templates".

This will be especially useful if you use a RAM-disk with a System Folder. You won't need to copy the templates themselves in the RAM-disk, only the alias will suffice.

The "Carnet Templates" folder is not installed in the application folder because the application may be located on a locked volume such as a CD-ROM, or on an application server where the user has only read-only access.

I have created a template with pictures, but Carnet can't print with it.

The template may contain a very large image, wich will need a lot of memory to print even if only a small part of the image is actually visible and used in the template. In that case, change the image and paste in the template only the small part you need.
You may also want to grow the amount of memory allocated to Carnet. See Compatibility.

How to print the notes in several columns?

The <notes> tag is handled in a special manner. The text in the Notes field can't appear more than once on the page. If the template contains several occurrences of the <notes> tag, the first will be handled normally, but the next occurrences will only be used if the notes text overflows the first box.

Thus, simply create extra boxes to simulate two or more columns and insert a <notes> tag in each of them. Be careful to the order of the boxes: The first is the most backward in the template.

How can I set at once all the records by company or by name? How to change at once all the phone labels on the whole list?

Export the list as tab-delimited text, then import it again as a new list. While importing, do not link the list by name and list by company fields, nor the phone labels. Carnet will use the default values set in the Preferences.

If needed, you can export as text and use the text in another program (spreadsheet, word processor) to make finer changes before reimporting in Carnet. In that case, be careful to not change the number of delimiters (tabs, returns), else you may have serious problems to bring the file back in Carnet, or anywhere else for that matter.

I have a file containing 100,000 names and addresses. Can I import it in Carnet?

Certainly. But you must allocate more memory to Carnet before, see Compatibility. If you don't have enough physical memory, try activating the virtual memory in the Memory control panel.

Of course, the loading time of your list will be somewhat longer, a few seconds instead of a fraction of a second. Nonetheless, selecting a record by typing the first characters will be still as fast.

I don't have a modem, can I still dial the numbers with Carnet?

Yes, using the Audio mode, through the Macintosh's loudspeaker. You must pick-up the phone and place the mouthpiece as close as possible of the speaker (see A Bit of Telephony).

I have a Minitel 1 connected to my Macintosh, but nothing happens when I dial.

This is perfectly normal: The Minitel 1 doesn't contain the required dialing circuitry. To dial, you need a Minitel 2 or better. The Minitel 12 is the most comfortable solution.

I want to print the notes in my address book. But some parts of my notes are confidential and should not be printed. What can I do?

Use the § character to mark the end of the printable part of the notes. Any text following that character will not be printed.

If you wish to print categories, you should then place them at the beginning of the notes (see Preferences).

I use a RAM-disk in which I copy a system folder to restart with it. Carnet seems to dislike that because it asks again for my serial number after each restart...

Move the Carnet Prefs file out of the Preferences folder and put it in the Carnet Folder along with the application. Then create an alias of the prefs file, put the alias in the Preferences folder and rename it "Carnet Prefs".

Thus, copying the system folder will copy only the alias to the RAM-disk, and the problem will go away. Carnet may ask once more for the serial number, then not anymore.

I would like to print a large number of envelopes with a logo picture, without any recipient indication. How can I do that?

Duplicate the envelope template you wish to use and open the copy, then delete the text box that contains the recipient tags. Then print the whole list, but printing only pages 1 to n, where n is the number of envelopes you want. Alternatively, print only the current record with n copies. The data in the records are not used at all, as they don't appear on the printing template.

I want to print my address book and include it in my organizer.

Avery™ has several interesting products to do just that. Carnet makes it very easy to print on these sheets. They are standard-sized paper with precut sub-pages and ring holes for standard organizer sizes. Here are two examples (there are more):

Avery™ L7901: To be printed in landscape mode with 3 sub-pages, for a pocket-sized organizer.

Avery™ L7902: To be printed in landscape mode with 2 sub-pages, for a desktop-sized organizer.

Carnet contains predefined templates for a few of these models and lets you define any other size. The printed address book is really nice.
