Dialing in Less Than One Second

Carnet offers several methods of navigation in the list:

  • Using the mouse, click on a name in the list. Carnet selects that record and displays its content.
  • Using the arrow keys, move to the previous or the next record.
  • Type the f key: Carnet selects the first record starting with a F. Type quickly f and r: Carnet selects 'Free Credit Unlimited', which is the first record starting with fr.

If Carnet has selected Service Station instead, try again typing a little faster. If you wait more than one second between two keys, Carnet will take it as a new search.
In this case, as there is no record starting with R, it has selected the closest match.

This search method, by typing the first characters of the name, is very important. The record will be found instantly, whatever the size of the list, even with tens of thousands of records.

Now we are going to call that Free Credit company. Type quickly f and r, Carnet finds the right record. Then hit <return> to start dialing.

You can hear the number in the Macintosh's speaker. You have only typed three keys to find the record and call your party!

The dialing has no effect yet on the telephone. This will come a little further in this tutorial.
