Printing an Envelope

To sum up this tutorial, you are going to create a printing template to print envelopes, in only six steps.

Step 1 -- In the File menu, drop down the Print Template submenu and choose New Template... to make this dialog appear:

Click the Envelope radio button and enter the name of the template in the field: Tutorial Envelope. Click the OK button. The new template appears.

Step 2 -- Before defining the template's content, you must set up its size and format. Click the Envelope Size... button.

In the popup menu, choose US #9 Envelope (3 7/8 x 8 7/8"). The dimensions are transfered to the Height and Width fields. Click OK.

An alert appears to remind you that most envelopes should be printed in landscape mode, while the default page setup is in portrait mode. Let's correct the page setup now.

Step 3 -- Choose Page Setup... in the File menu, and click the landscape mode icon. Select the Carnet page in the dialog to specify the loading mode that your printer supports for the envelopes. Some printers center the envelopes, others place them to the right or to the left edge of the feeder. Choose the appropriate setting and click OK.

If your screen is large enough, grow the template window to see the whole envelope. The shadowed rectangle displays the envelope in real size. Depending on the printer's paper feed setting, left, center or right, the grey area may be present on the top, bottom or left side of the envelope.

Important -- This grey area shows the physical margins of the printer. Its size and location depend of the printer. It may be completely absent if your printer can use the whole paper surface without any margin. An item placed in the grey area will not be printed.

Step 4 -- Click the text tool and draw a rectangle on the envelope. Carnet creates a text box and sets it to edit mode:

In the Data menu, choose Company: Carnet inserts a <company> tag in the text box. Hit <return>, then choose First Name and Last Name in the Data menu. Hit <return> again, then choose Address in the menu. The text box should now look like this:

Click outside of the text box, the contour of the box disappears and the text is displayed directly on the envelope. Click again on the text to select the text object:

The handles of the object appear. By clicking and dragging the handles, you can resize and reshape the object. By clicking and dragging the object itself, you can move it on the envelope. Try it!

If you want to edit the text again, double-click the text box to put it back in edit mode. To leave the edit mode, hit the <enter> key or click outside of the box.

Step 5 -- Select the text tool again and create a second box, on the top left of the envelope. Enter your name and address in the box, like the sender information on a letter.

Click the second text box to select it (if you can't select it, click outside first to leave the edit mode). Using the Text menu's submenus, try changing the font and size of the object.

The envelope should now look like this:

Step 6 -- Click the tool and trace a horizontal line under the sender information:

Now click the tool and draw a rectangle under the line, down to the envelope's bottom:

You have just created a picture object. Open the Scrapbook in the Apple menu, copy a picture. Click the picture object to select it (the handles must be visible like above) and paste the picture. The picture appears in the box:

Your new template is done! You can close its window, Carnet saves it automatically. There is no need to open the template to use it for printing.

Back on the list window. You can see the template name on the window's bottom left. You can click on the name to select the template before printing.

Printing an envelope -- Select the record of the person you want to write to. Insert the envelope in the printer respecting the orientation, then choose Print... in the File menu.

In the print dialog, verify that Print Only Current Record is checked (in the Carnet part of the print dialog), then click the Print button. The envelope is printed.

From now on, to print another envelope, simply select the template in the popup menu, insert the envelope in the printer and print it. Of course, you can show the template again and change it to suit your needs.

Using these same tools, Carnet can print address books of any size, cards and labels. You can create any number of templates and reuse them at will.

Congratulations!

You now know most of Carnet's main features. You should also read the Dialing Setup page to really dial the numbers using the modem.

If your address book is already available in another program, there is no need to type it again. Read the Importing page to bring your data into Carnet.
