Drag and Drop

Carnet fully supports drag and drop, including Internet-savvy drag and drop. You can move the edited text or the entire record to another list, to another application, or to the Finder to create a clipping file.

To drag a record, click either:

  • the clipping button on the top right,
  • in the list, where the dragging starts if the mouse button is kept down for one second on the clicked record.

The dragged record contains all the Carnet data, so a record moved from a list to another one will be fully copied. Likewise, a record dropped on the desktop becomes a clipping file, and the clipping file later dropped on a list can retrieve the whole original record.

The clipping also contains a 'TEXT' version of the data. By default, the drag only contains the Company, Firstname, Name and Address fields. Thus, you can drag the record to a word processor to start a letter with instant addressing.

To bring the other fields as well, hold the <shift> key down while dragging.

When a record is dropped in the trash, a clipping file is created in the trash and the record is deleted from the list. In case of error, you can recover the record in the trash and drop it back on the list, or, more immediatly, use the Undo command.

When a record is dropped back on its own list, Carnet beeps and shows an explicit error message if the action is repeated. If you really want to duplicate the record in the list, hold down the <option> key while dragging.

Drag and drop handles Internet URLs. An URL dropped on a list creates a new record, and Carnet extracts the company name (if possible) from the URL. Dragging a bookmark directly from a web browser is also supported. If an URL or an e-mail address is dropped in a phone number field, the zone of that number is automatically set to 'Internet'.
